Kgaugelo Miya
Head of Project Development and Sustainability

Kgaugelo Miya is Head of Project Development and Sustainability at Climate Action Initiative South Africa. Based in Johannesburg, she brings a strong technical foundation in environmental management, GIS and remote sensing, coupled with hands-on experience in environmental fieldwork, data capture and community engagement. Her background in project coordination and events management complements her technical skills, enabling her to translate complex climate science into practical, deliverable interventions. 

In her role Kgaugelo will lead the design and delivery of flagship programmes including the Youth Climate Action Fellowship, Resilience and Adaptation Hubs and the Green Innovation Incubator, while supporting the Renewable Energy Accelerator and the Climate Finance Initiative to mobilise resources and scale impact. She will oversee project appraisal, technical monitoring and stakeholder engagement to ensure each programme achieves measurable outcomes for communities, ecosystems and partner organisations.

A practical problem solver and committed mentor, Kgaugelo combines technical rigour with an inclusive approach to capacity building. She is focused on making projects bankable, strengthening early warning and resilience systems, and growing youth-led climate innovation so that South African communities benefit from durable, low-carbon development. Her leadership is grounded in clear metrics, robust reporting and a belief that practical action today secures a fairer climate future for all.

Kgaugelo holds Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSSGEM), Geography and Environmental Management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). A formal qualifications in environmental and sustainability-related disciplines, with training that includes environmental management, geographic information systems and climate-related data analysis. Her academic grounding is complemented by active volunteering with the South African Youth Climate Change Coalition, where she has contributed to youth advocacy, climate education and grassroots mobilisation. This combination of academic preparation and civic engagement informs her commitment to inclusive climate action and strengthens her ability to design projects that are technically sound, socially responsive and aligned with South Africa’s climate priorities.
